Do you feel like you need a Disney Translator? Well don't worry you are not the only one. Walt Disney World is full of abbreviations and terms and that can make it challenging to figure out what the heck is going on. So with "Disney Speak" we will work on teaching you the language of Disney one term at a time! This language barrier is a good reason to use a Disney Travel Specialist!
Today's Word is: Rope Drop
This is one of the most important terms to grasp to help make the most of your Disney vacation.
Rope Drop is referring to the actual dropping of a rope to start the day at a Disney park. Disney has for the most part stopped actually dropping a rope and letting the masses run (walk fast - never run) to their first attraction of the day. At the Magic Kingdom they now let you past the tapstiles and go into the court yard space in front of the train station. There is a rope that stops anyone from going under the train station to Main Street USA.
There is then a small show when the train arrives and they count down to the "rope drop" and then they remove the rope and you "walk" down main street. Once you reach the entrance to the "land" you are attending you will run into another rope.
Once the clock hits the opening time for that day, they walk the rope to the headline attraction in that area.
At EPCOT, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom the procedure is very different from Magic Kingdom. They hold everyone outside the tapstiles until about 15 or 10 min before the official park opening. Once they make a small prerecorded announcement they start to let everyone in. So if you are first in line at the tapstiles then you have a great chance at being first in line at your first attraction (Soarin', Toy Story Midway Mania, or Kilimanjaro Safaris) This is why it is so important to be at the park well before it opens!
Epcot an hour before opening - we were first in line! |
Epcot about 50 min before opening - a few more people have shown up. |
Epcot about 25 min before opening! |
First in line for rope drop at Hollywood Studios |
Animal Kingdom - first in line! |
That is why we love to talk about rope drop even if 3 out of 4 parks no longer have a rope!
